Befrienders
"How Can It Possibly Help? Can They Really Help You Over the Phone? Sometimes it's hard to admit that we need other people. Sometimes depression & suicidal thoughts contain a component of upset & anger towards the world & the people in it. But the truth is, nothing can really substitute for human contact - we do need people.
"The truth is, just talking to someone, explaining, sharing, venting, being listened to, can often give us a temporary reprieve. Talking to someone can temporarily change your perspective - Human contact changes the brain chemistry & opens that emotion 'pod' of pent up emotions for temporary relief - and it may not be what they say, but just the exchange of emotions like empathy, compassion, & concern."

Suicide Hotline at Mental Health Sanctuary
"If you are in immediate risk for suicide or self harm, call 911 right away to obtain medical and/or psychiatric assistance. If you are presently in a crisis and/or feeling suicidal, you will find a list of telephone numbers and /or email addresses [on this web site] of caring volunteers. Though these volunteers have received some training, they are not mental health professionals and are not a substitute for professional assistance."

Suicide Hotline for Young Adults
"If you suspect a friend is contemplating suicide, take the initiative and just ask the person, "Are you thinking about killing or harming yourself?" and "How are you going to kill yourself?" This will often get them to talk about it. Be straight with them, get right to the subject. Tell an adult, a teacher, a guidance counselor, or their parents about your concern for your friend's safety. Give them the phone number of a local suicide hotline; there is a number in almost every phone book and on the Internet. Or, in the U.S., call the Suicide & Crisis Hotline 1-800-999-9999. The Suicide National Hotline in the U.S. is: 1-800-784-2433. The person may get angry with you initially, but it may save your friend's life."
